What Should We Pay Attention to After a Tooth Extraction?

  • After a tooth extraction, bite firmly on the gauze your dentist has placed for about 30 minutes and swallow normally. Do not collect saliva in your mouth or spit frequently, as this can prevent the formation of a blood clot and cause continued bleeding.
  • Do not rinse your mouth on the day of the extraction. Rinsing can dislodge the clot needed for healing, leading to delayed recovery.
  • Slight bleeding or oozing may continue for 6 to 24 hours. Your saliva may appear red due to blood. This is normal—do not panic or assume there’s excessive bleeding.
  • You may experience pain after the procedure. You can take a pain reliever recommended by your dentist (except aspirin). The pain may peak as the numbness wears off, so it’s best to take the painkiller before the anesthesia completely wears off.
  • If your dentist has prescribed antibiotics, be sure to take them on time and continue until the course is complete.
  • Since teeth are connected to the jawbone, the bone may become exposed after extraction. This may feel like a leftover piece of tooth, but do not touch it with your tongue or any object. The exposed bone will be covered by gum tissue within a few days.
  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol for 24 hours after the extraction.
  • After the procedure, rest with your head elevated on a high pillow. Avoid taking hot showers.
  • Do not eat until the numbness in your mouth has completely worn off to avoid biting or injuring the numb area. Also avoid hot, spicy, or acidic foods that may irritate the extraction site.
  • You can resume your normal oral hygiene routine, including tooth brushing, 24 hours after the extraction.
  • Swelling in the face after surgery is normal. Applying ice during the first 24 hours will help reduce swelling. The swelling should subside within a week.
  • If swelling and pain persist after one week, or if you experience prolonged bleeding (over 24 hours), bad taste or odor in the mouth, consult your dentist immediately.
  • If you had a surgical procedure or stitches placed after extraction, your stitches will be removed one week later—don’t forget your follow-up appointment.
